Literacy PlanClick Image to view largerGrammarOur first unit is on the Sentence. Students will examine the parts of a sentence. After learning that a sentence tells a complete thought, students will be able to ensure that their writing is free of incomplete and run-on sentences. Identifying the different kinds of sentences will help the students realize that good writers vary the types of sentences in their writing.

SpellingThe purpose of spelling is to make sure written work can be read and understood. Students need to recognize when something is spelled incorrectly and have a “toolbox” of strategies to enable them to spell a word correctly. We will use spelling programs that provide hands-on opportunities to manipulate word features in a way that allows them to generalize beyond isolated, individual word examples to entire groups of words that are spelled the same way.

We feel it is important to create a life-long love for reading. Reading should be enjoyable. Your child should read for as long as a book "holds" them. If your child is reading a "just right" book on an interesting topic, you may find they will be reading longer and longer each evening.
There are several ways that your child should engage in reading at home. Each type develops different reading skills. Spend one - two times per week engaging in each type of reading.
Reading and speaking about what you read at a high level takes years of practice. You will be amazed at your child's growth if you make reading and talking about the stories a regular routine in your home. We will ask your child to set goals and record the amount of reading done each month. Please be aware of this chart and sign it regularly. Thanks for your help. Happy Reading!! . |
